Form Community

We are in the process of developing a “Form Community” for FillAnyPdf.com. The community will be an area where you can search for pre-made forms to use – or upload your own to share. If you find a form you want to use just click “import” and the form will automatically be transferred to your account. We expect the Form Community to be a benefit for our users and save them a lot of time creating forms.

Spark Start

Went to the Microsoft Spark Start meeting / conference today in Dallas. They presented some of their newer software and services. There were also some panel discussions as well on business and marketing. Overall, they had a great conference. FillAnyPdf.com is built with ASP.NET and uses SQL Server for the database, so I like to participate in Microsoft events whenever I can.

Site Updates

Today we added several new features to the site. The new features include:

- Link Builder: Gives you a link to post to your website that takes people directly to your form.

- Highlighter: Highlight anything in the forms.

- Redo: You can now “redo” if you accidentally “undo” too many times.

- Whiteout border: When applying whiteout, the whiteout now has a border on it so you can tell where the white page ends and the whiteout begins.

- Signature number search: enter a digital signature number and find the form it is associated with

Our users are the best source of new features. Keep sending your suggestions!

Whiteout / Blackout

We launched a major update last night with some new features. One of the new features is whiteout / blackout (aka redact). Whiteout will cover anything on the PDF with white, which you can then type over.

Blackout will cover anything on the PDF with solid black that hides anything underneath. So, you can see that something has been blacked out but you don’t know what was there. This is also called “redact” and is what you see the government frequently do when they release previously classified documents.

Making it easier to sign a PDF

It can be difficult to write your name with a mouse. That is why our newest feature on FillAnyPdf.com is a “digital signature” where all you have to do is type your name. The site automatically prints who signed it and when onto the form. It also saves the information in the database.

For example, if you receive a link to fill out a form, the link is specific to you, and has a unique id that is matched to your email address. The link id, your IP address, and your email address are all saved in the database to verify that you are the person who signed it.

For people who are more comfortable with handwritten signatures, there is also hardware available that may make things easier. One item is a touch-screen monitor, which are starting to become more popular. Another is a pen tablet like the one at http://tinyurl.com/cm3bpe
Using a pen tablet like this makes signing your name almost as easy as writing on paper.

Beta Testing

Our Beta testing continues with great feedback coming in. To support collecting feedback we are using uservoice.com, which makes it easy for users to send feedback and suggestions. We’re also collecting feedback from testers at usertesting.com. This is a unique service where a tester’s screen is recorded and their voice is also recorded at the same time. The combination of the screen and the voice gives us a better understanding of how the site is being used and helps us keep making improvements.

New Hosting Provider

Our new hosting provider is Rackspace, which has been great providing us customer service. When you call tech support a live person answers the phone and I had my questions answered in a few minutes. The data is saved to hard drives with RAID and then backed up to tape every day.
